Maples & sycamores for JTRE projects

tree nursery JTRE

In a pioneering green project in Bratislava, developer J&T Real Estate (JTRE) has partnered with experts to support a tree nursery with over 60 trees and 60 shrubs. Located in a specially-designated area in the Nové Lido area (Petržalka side of the Danube), the nursery will provide plantings for JTRE projects, as well as city municipalities and the general public.

"With this fledging tree nursery, we aim to ascertain the long-term option of supporting the growth of greenery for our projects. We also wish to highlight that new developments can often play a positive role in replacing urban greenery, which is reaching the end of its lifespan. The new durable greenery designed in cooperation with horticulturalists can deliver benefits such as boosting the life-quality and health of Bratislava’s residents, and make new city districts even more attractive."

Pavel Pelikán, JTRE’s executive director

Expert inputs supported the selection of suitable saplings for the tree nursery. Tasked with supporting local biodiversity, preference is given to biotypes appropriate to the local environment that naturally flourish without additional care or watering: sycamore, Norway maple and mountain maple.

Trees with larger crowns and leaves capture more airborne dust and emissions, better regulate air humidity through evaporation, provide summer shade and prevent overheating, and autumnal leaf-fall allows welcome low winter sun to reach surrounding buildings and greatly reduce urban heat islands.

"JTRE fully supports sustainable development. The urbanization of Nové Lido will necessitate the replacement of the historic overgrown greenery with new, higher-quality non-invasive species. Our own-grown tree stock will enable the efficient greening of the new neighbourhood with several parks and green courtyards."

Martin Stohl, JTRE’s ESG manager

The JTRE tree nursery is adjacent to the Nové Lido community garden, which opened in spring 2022 and is used by nearly 50 green-fingered gardeners from Bratislava. This natural habitat also supports bee hives and an insect hotel.
